Clinical sports massage serves two primary purposes. The first is to improve athletic performance while reducing risk of injury. The second is to improve recovery time in the event you are injured. Everything else is incidental...but the incidentals are also significant.
Work is generally focused on specific muscle groups related to the sport - or sports - you participate in. Various massage and bodywork techniques will break down scar tissue, increase blood flow to muscles, increase active range of motion in the joints and address imbalances which may limit performance and contribute to injury.Much of the work done in sports massage involves active participation on the part of the recipient and may involve mild to moderate discomfort. Clothing such as shorts and tanktops are frequently worn to allow more movement on the table and increase the effectiveness of treatments.
If you are serious about athletic performance and want to gain an additional advantage, sports massage should be a regular part of your training and race season.
